Las Ánimas is a singular expression of Garnacha from three tiny 80-year-old northeast-facing parcels (totalling 0.48ha) planted at 1170 meters altitude on granitic sandy soils in the cold, secluded paraje (lieu-dit) of Las Herguiejuelas in the forests surrounding Villanueva de Ávila. These are the kind of vineyards that assure you, at first glance, that the wines made from them will be something very special! One of the vineyards was planted by Guzman’s great grandmother, plus two neighboring parcels that Barbara and Guzmán acquired. Grapes from all three parcels were de-stemmed, fermented together with native yeasts, and macerated for 30 days. Free run and approximately 15% of pressed juice were then aged for nine months in one 500L Stockinger and one 225L Sylvain barrel. Barbara describes 2021 as a “radically cold” year in the paraje Las Heguiejuelas, which they say accentuates the perfume and verticality of Las Ànimas.
